? Artist of the Month: Mother Maybelle Carter

Born in Virginia in May 1909, Mother Maybelle helped shape country music as we know it. She revolutionized guitar playing with the Carter Scratch—using her thumb on the low strings for melody while strumming rhythm with her fingers.

A few of her timeless songs include “Wildwood Flower” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” She performed with her daughters Helen, Anita, and June Carter Cash.

Maybelle passed away in October 1978 at the age of 69, leaving behind a powerful musical legacy.
